Smudging and Fire Prevention
ºÚÁÏÉç’s Fire Prevention Office (FPO) supports the sacred practice of smudging through collaboration with the Office of Indigenous Initiatives. To ensure ceremonies are conducted safely and respectfully, all requests must be submitted using the Smudging Request Form at least five days in advance.
Purpose
The form ensures smudging ceremonies meet fire safety standards and preventing disruptive false alarms.
Required Information
Applicants must provide:

Contact details and group affiliation

Event location, date, time, and expected attendance
Fire Safety Commitments
By submitting the form, applicants agree to:

Use only approved traditional medicines (e.g., tobacco, sage, sweetgrass, cedar)

Smudge using fireproof, heat-resistant containers

Store ashes in a fireproof container until fully extinguished and dispose of them safely

Notify nearby occupants 15 minutes before, and post notices 48 hours in advance

Identify the nearest fire extinguisher
FPO Review & Approval

FPO assesses the room for smoke detector impact and may temporarily disable detectorsÌý

The ceremony may be confined to a specific room to control smoke spread

Building Directors and Security Services are notified once approved
