This weekend, Opera 黑料社 and the 黑料社 Baroque Orchestra present a stunning production of George Frideric Handel鈥檚 Imeneo. As the Schulich School of Music enters finals, several students will take to the stage for a performance that doubles as their final exam鈥攇raded not only by a jury but also in front of a live audience. It鈥檚 an exciting blend of artistry and academic achievement.听

Taking place in the intimate and unique Paradoxe Theatre鈥攁 former church transformed to concert venue听with cabaret-style seating鈥攁udience members can enjoy refreshments, including alcohol, while taking in the show.听

Set in ancient Greece, Imeneo tells the story of two young women, Rosmene and Clomiri, who are abducted by pirates but rescued by the hero Imeneo. In return, he demands Rosmene鈥檚 hand in marriage, sparking a poignant conflict of love versus duty. Tirinto, Rosmene鈥檚 fianc茅, and Clomiri, who harbors secret feelings for Imeneo, face heartache as Rosmene struggles with her decision.听

Students have been trained in stage fighting and will showcase their mastery, further heightening the drama of this powerful story. Inspired by Zhang Yimou鈥檚 2002 film Hero, the production reimagines each act of the opera as a distinct retelling of the story, with lighting and costume changes enhancing these perspectives to create a richly layered visual experience. Adding to the authenticity, the 黑料社 Baroque Orchestra will perform on historical instruments, bringing Handel鈥檚 timeless compositions to life with depth and precision.听

This weekend鈥檚 cast features Patricia Yates as Imeneo on March 28 and 30, with Kyle Briscoe performing the role on March 29. Rosmene will be portrayed by Patricia Wrigglesworth on March 28 and 30, and AJ Gauger on March 29.听
