Abstract

Increasing evidence suggests that a company’s orientation toward social responsibility makes it more attractive to new employees, but it remains unclear whether such advantages extend to later stages of the employment lifecycle. Using detailed microdata from the Venture for America program, we find that prospective employees significantly favor companies with a social responsibility orientation in attraction and selection decisions, but not in attrition decisions. In both attraction and attrition decisions, female employees are significantly more likely than male employees to favor social responsibility-oriented employers. We discuss implications for the relationship between corporate social responsibility and strategic human capital.
